The eruption has entered what the geologists state is a “stable” phase, in that it is still going but the lava is not a threat to the town of Grindavik nor any infrastructure. The Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management has reduced the threat level due to the eruption from red to amber and reduced the area for which it applies. As stated before, this eruption as it is currently will not affect the running of EcoRally Iceland 2024.
The eruption has matured, as the geologists say. It has gone from being a continuous eruption along the whole fissure, to six sites or craters along the fissure and the rest of the fissure has closed. The flow of magma or lava has thus become a bit less than it was at the beginning. This trend follows what has happened in previous eruptions, so everyone concerned thinks the worst is over.
The eruption seems to be slowly getting smaller. The length of the fissure is now around 2.4km whereas it was nearly 4km at its longest and the flow of lava has stabilised. Although the eruption is a serious interruption into the daily lives of everyone around it, one can but smile a little when photographers catch a surreal image. The sign “roadwork ahead” gets a whole new meaning in this picture.
The status has not changed all that much. The lava seems to be going around the town of Grindavík and seems to have slowed down towards the Blue Lagoon. The most significant change from earlier is when the fissure extended to the south it hit a pocket of ground water / seawater which results in smoke and dust coming up. Quite spectacular but expected to stop as the eruption “matures”. There are several live cams that cover the event. Currently this one is quite good as it seems the geologists are using it to look at different things, zooming and […]
At around 12:45GMT an eruption started just to the north of Grindavík, a town on the Reykjanes peninsula. The eruption is along a fissure which runs roughly north to south and is currently around 3.0-3.5km long. It is about 15km from Keflavík airport and about 30km from Reykjavík. The lava is flowing towards the evacuated town of Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon (also evacuated), which means it is travelling away from the city of Reykjavík. The eruption is not expected to affect flights and transportation to and from the country. Due to the recent eruptions on the Reykjanes peninsula and […]
The area around Grindavik on the south coast has become geologically active. The area is known for sort burst eruptions which do not last that long. A more detailed description with a overhead picture showing the location is found here. However, the bottom line is that these geological disturbances should not affect the rally.
